Official Statement
WHEREAS, Dyslexia ia a language-based learning
difference resulting in difficulties with specific language skills,
particularly reading, and may also experience difficulties in skills such
as spelling, writing, and speaking; and WHEREAS,
Dyslexia can make it very difficult for a student to succeed academically
in the typical instructional environment; and WHEREAS,
Dyslexia is a lifelong condition with approximately 15-20 percent of the United
States population having some form of reading disabilities, of
which roughly 85 percent are dyslexic; and WHEREAS,
Dyslexia does not discriminate, affecting people of all background and
intellectual levels; and WHEREAS, The
International Dyslexia Association, founded in 1949, is a nonprofit
organization that promotes the understanding, treatment and prevention of
the problems of Dyslexia; and WHEREAS, the Connecticut
Chapter of the International Dyslexia Association provides dyslexia
information, helps with appropriate remediation, and assists Connecticut
residents with resources to help in the understanding of the problems
involved with dyslexia; now THEREFORE, I, M.
JODI RELL, Governor of the State of Connecticut, in recognition of the
need to understand this learning difference, do hereby officially proclaim
the month of October, 2006, as DYSLEXIA
AWARENESS MONTH
in the State of Connecticut.
