Common ADD (AD/HD-I) Symptoms

  • Difficulty working through tasks that have not yet been mastered; but, once a task is mastered, the frustration level disappears
     
  • Poor concept of the passage of time
  • Difficulty working "now" for rewards "tomorrow" 
  • Difficulty sustain attention during a long, low-stimulus task (e.g., reading).
  • Difficulty sustaining attention during a high-stimulus task (e.g., video games)
  • Difficulty with spelling and writing
  • Difficulty with reading fluency because of spurious miscues or anticipating incorrectly upcoming text
  • Difficulty with organization
  • Resistance to writing down multi-step math problems, preferring rather to perform operations "in their heads
  • Always "thinking" or considering multiple options / solutions
  • Prone to make unnecessary / careless mistakes
  • Difficulty completing tasks (before moving on to the next big ideas!)
  • The need to have an item near-by or in-hand to sustain attention (e.g. pen, toy, etc.)

ADHD-Hyperactivity Symptoms

  • Difficulty remaining still - the need to always be moving (whole body, hands, feet, etc.)
  • The need to have an item near-by or in-hand to reduce movements (e.g. pen, toy, cushy ball, etc.)
  • Inability to control saying inappropriate things or waiting for a turn.
  • Age inappropriate social behavior - perhaps described as being several years behind in this regard.
  • Inability to observe the appropriate personal space (get to close to people when interacting with them).
